So you see, it isn’t really a rejection of the notion of sin or hell per se. Rather, we are repulsed by the proportionality with which God imposes the penalty of hell. Bottom line: We struggle with the “If God is loving . . . why hell?” question because, from our human perspective, we feel that God is unfair in his judgment and punishment as applied to most people.

Shouldn’t We Examine the Question from God’s Perspective?

Earlier we mentioned that many leading theologians confess to having similar feelings of unfairness with the concept of hell. We quoted John Stott who confessed to feeling queasy with the notion of hell, but he also explained that human feelings are not determinative in these matters.

But our emotions are a fluctuating, unreliable guide to truth and must not be exalted to the place of supreme authority in determining it. As a committed Evangelical, my question must be—and is—not what does my heart tell me, but what does God’s word say.13

We understand Stott to be saying that if God exists as the Bible describes him, then our feelings about hell and judgment are irrelevant. If God’s Word is true, then we are stuck with hell and God’s punishment as described in the Bible whether we agree with it or not. And for that reason, it is appropriate that we now turn to see what the Bible teaches in an effort to view the “If God is loving . . . why hell?” question from God’s perspective.
